What on Earth
Is God Doing?
When God sent His Son into the world on that first Christmas, wise men came who had traveled many miles to worship this newborn King! They arrived in Jerusalem seeking the birthplace of the Messiah, and the religious leaders knew the exact town where Christ was to be born. They directed the wise men right to the Old Testament prophecy: "But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall He come forth unto Me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting."
Sadly, not a single one of those religious leaders who knew the Messianic prophecies exerted any effort to travel the six miles to Bethlehem to see the Messiah for themselves. It seems that the appearance of the wise men and their great desire to know about the Christ would have at the least prompted them to go investigate for themselves. Their fear of Herod and his iron-fisted rule over Jerusalem may have been a partial reason for their lack of interest, but whatever their excuse, they evidently did not care to know what God was about to do in their world.
Today, God is still working in our world. We have Divine promises that the victorious Lord Jesus will return to this world though we don't know when. Jesus emphatically told us that no one would know the exact time, so we must therefore, always be ready (Mark.13:32). We do have the advantage of looking at God’s working in the past and the many teachings in His word. These provide a preview of what He is up to so that we can better live for Him and serve Him in our time (2 Peter 3:13).
Care to know what God is up to in our world? We have a helpful course in our BBN Bible Institute to recommend: 50100 What on Earth is God Doing, taught by Dr. Renald Showers. This study is a great way to finish out 2014 or to get a jump start in studying God’s word for 2015.
Merry Christmas!
