The Gladyator
Have you heard of the Gladyator? You need to hear about her. Jenny Wood Allen of Dundee, Scotland, completed a marathon at age 90. She completed more than 50 marathons after the age of 71. She passed away December 30, 2010 at the age of 99. She penned her own epitaph, “I have done my best in the race. I have finished the course and kept the faith.” Jenny's record was finally surpassed by Gladys Burrill who is the current Guinness Book of World Records holder of the oldest female to finish a marathon (26.2 miles). She completed her fifth Honolulu marathon in 2010 at the age of 92. Her finish time was 9 hrs. and 53 mins; quite a feat for someone who only began to take running serious at age 86. Though her friends call her Gladys, her local newspaper has nick named her the Gladyator.
Both of these unusual women have inspired many young and old alike that they too can accomplish great things by setting a goal and then pursuing it with determination and diligence. Believers are universally called out by God to become students and workmen in studying His word (II Timothy 2:15). It was Paul the Apostle who had written earlier to Timothy, “Bodily exercise profits little.” Most of us can appreciate there are many benefits from participating in regular physical exercise, but compared to our needs for spiritual exercise, physical exercise is without a doubt, inferior. Participation in some physical exercise programs is limited by age, size, location, finances and opportunity, but studying God’s word is an exercise in which just about anyone can engage. Bible Broadcasting Network (BBN) has a very practical and beneficial program to make Bible study interesting and life changing – BBN Bible Institute. Our BI is available to anyone from ages 13 to 100+ at no cost to them and is available 24 hours day, seven days a week. These online courses can be studied wherever you have a computer, or smart phone with an internet connection.
Select a course for study today and set your sight on the finish line. Who knows, maybe you’ll become known as the Gladyator of the BI!
