Vital Information!

A group of Boy Scouts were intently watching and listening to the visiting lecturer as he shared with them his work, which happened to be snake-handling, and as he spoke, a blue bag lay beside him filled with a large Eastern Diamondback rattlesnake which was his visual demonstration that day. As he spoke about the work of handling these deadly animals, he picked up the bag and dumped out all 7 feet of the angry snake on the table as the boys and their scoutmaster watched with amazement! He continued speaking, and as he gestured with his hand, evidently he came a little too close for the snake’s comfort and in a split second the snake bit the handler on the hand and immediately slithered off the table and onto the floor, headed toward the terrified scouts! The scoutmaster quickly yelled to the boys to stand on their chairs, and the bitten handler stepped between the boys and the snake, working carefully with his feet until he was able after about 10 minutes to get the snake safely back into the bag and then was rushed to the hospital. Though that handler knew very much about snakes, and especially that particular snake, yet he was only barely able to escape nearly losing his life by making one careless move.

There are two very important truths we can learn from this true account, one is that we have an even deadlier spiritual enemy than this rattler in whom the Bible calls ...”that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan...” in Revelation 12:9. The apostle Paul also tells us in writing to the Corinthians in 2 Corinthians 2:11: “Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.” Certainly we don’t need to have a preoccupation with satan, yet we do need to be aware of his tricks, so that we may know how to avoid the spiritual pitfalls in which he would love for us to be entrapped.

The second and even more important spiritual truth we learn is that just as that handler put himself between the deadly rattler and the otherwise helpless boys, just so we have a Savior who willingly gave Himself for our sins that we might have life through Him!
