For Whose Applause?

For Whose Applause?

He was way out in front, the crowd was wildly cheering as he approached the finish line, and as he looked up at the crowd, a wave of approval and accomplishment washed over him. He incited more of their applause by pumping his arms and giving them thumbs up. However, with about two steps to go, his opponent from a rival university, blew by him and grabbed the victory by a step. In disbelief and shame, University of Oregon runner, Tanguy Pepiot, fell to the ground, instantly realizing his folly. Victory was a sure thing, the crowds applause intoxicating; it was time to finish well, not be shamed by distraction and premature celebration.

As God’s children in the race of grace we sometimes forget for whom we are running. We are not striving to win God’s salvation. That was provided by the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus and freely given by God. We should be striving to please Him by passionately and obediently doing His will and His work -His way, and for His approval. We can easily become distracted by busyness, work, duties, sports, hobbies, travel, entertainment and a plethora of other things that will keep us from focusing on the things that matter the most to God. We must ever live our lives with the awareness of Christ’s impending coming and our Divine appointment where we must appear before Him as our Judge (a finish line we each much cross). We do not want to have to hang our heads in shame and feel the crushing disappointment of a life derailed by distractions and fleeting applause. It is the affirmation of our Savior that we should be seeking.

We are reminded in Scripture: “Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither labored in vain.”
