IN THE DARKNESS
For nearly two weeks the skies of New England were eerie and unnaturally dim. On May 19, 1780, it became so dark that history records it as “The Dark Day.” Some religious people had prophesied it as God’s impending judgment. On that day most offices closed because the looming darkness was hindering their ability to conduct business. However, the Colony Council continued in session. As they discussed whether or not they should close, respected Councilman, Abraham Davenport, spoke against an appeal for adjournment. He said, “I am against adjournment. The day of judgment is either approaching or it is not. If it is not, there is no cause for an adjournment; if it is, I choose to be found doing my duty. I wish therefore that candles may be brought.” The Council continued their duties in candle light.
We live in a time of descending darkness, increasing sin, escalating indecency and violence, while fear and hopelessness encroach. As God’s children we can resign ourselves to the darkness and lament its influence or we can resolve ourselves to our Christian duty. We must be lights in our dark world by sharing the light of the Gospel with those who cannot see their way to God and by purposely exposing ourselves to the truths of His Word. The more truth we inhale the more light we can expel.
