My Guilt?

The voice of conscience can be a powerful influence in our lives, so much so that life can literally be shortened due to it. A well-known evangelical Christian leader has said that many a hospital could likely be emptied of its patients if they only knew that they had been forgiven of their past. In fact, studies have shown that some people become criminals because subconsciously they want to be found out due to their guilt. There are many people who have also taken their own lives thinking this would alleviate their guilt, but, the truth is guilt is a spiritual problem and ending the physical life cannot take it away.  Physical weapons are useless against spiritual problems. It may seem therefore that there is no answer to the deeply ingrained problem of personal guilt, but when we turn to the Word of God, we find that there most certainly is an answer! “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:6-8) “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

Sometimes we get the consequences of sin confused with the forgiveness of sin. Yet in the Word of God we find another glorious truth! The truth is, because of what Christ did for us on the cross, God can speak us clean and put our ugly past behind us and say that we are completely clean! He remembers our sins no more. Yet we can and must distinguish between the forgiveness of sin and the consequences of sin. The Bible also gives us the wonderful truth that God remembering our sins no more means that though He knows about them, He doesn't regard them. This wondrous truth can give us new hope and new life!
