Let’s Chat

“Let’s Chat!”

Sometimes when we’re hurting, and feel as if the weight of the world is on our shoulders, we need a friend that cares enough to listen and offer genuine support that makes a difference. There is something about a new perspective on things that can bring healing and help, and of course that new perspective must be true if it will bring genuine and lasting help. This recalls the true account of the conversion of the great English Baptist preacher, Charles Spurgeon. He recounted himself that from a young man, he had felt a strong conviction and burden for his sins, and the most important thing in his life was to find out how he could get his sins forgiven. As a young man, he attended church after church and went to many godly men seeking the answer, but though he found many good truths that would be helpful to people that already knew the forgiveness of sins and had a relationship with God, his great burden was not lifted. His searching soul seemed to concur with the words of Jeremiah the prophet, chapter 8 and verse 20: “The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.” Young Charles Spurgeon never gave up seeking the answer to the most important question in all time and eternity: how can one’s sins be forgiven.

One Sunday morning, he had planned to attend a certain church, but it was so snowy that he could not make it, so he found a small church on a nearby corner, and went in with a handful of others. When he got in and sat down, he heard that even the preacher wasn’t able to get there! A deacon rose up to speak in the pastor’s absence, and he chose Isaiah 45:22 as his text that records God as saying, “Look unto Me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.” Evidently Charles Spurgeon’s sadness showed on his face, because the man looked straight at him and said that though he looked sad, he could find God’s forgiveness if he would simply look in faith to the Lord Jesus Christ who had died for him! Charles did just that and the burden of his sin rolled away and the realization that God had forgiven him because of Christ flooded his young heart!
